In this edition of the “PhysMath Students’ Success Stories” series, we spotlight 17-year-old Bagrat Bagratyan, whose dedication and passion for science have already led him to international recognition. In 2025, he was awarded a silver medal at the International Astronomy Olympiad held in Sochi.

Why Astronomy

I have always loved mathematics, but when I began attending physics olympiad training sessions, I developed a strong interest in physics and astronomy as well. In a way, it was mathematics that sparked my passion for these other subjects.

Participation in the International Olympiad

The International Astronomy Olympiad in Sochi was my first olympiad, where I won a silver medal. There was certainly some pressure, but during those days you are so fully engaged that your only focus is the competition and performing well.

Participating in olympiads also brings many additional benefits—we had the opportunity to interact with participants from different countries, attend astronomy lectures, and even take part in a tree-planting activity.

Role Models in the Field

I can say that my role models are my physics and astronomy teachers, Hrant Topchyan and Artavazd Harutyunyan.

Future Plans

I am currently planning to apply to one of the universities in China to study Aerospace Engineering. If possible, I would like to introduce and develop this field in Armenia, as I believe it is greatly needed in the country today.
